History to Mitigate Concerns
In September 2020, we contacted Councilwoman Warner regarding various concerns in our area, including unsafe traffic on Janine Drive. City Manager Brian Saeki responded via email, mentioning that the city plans to install solar speed signs, but as of today, they have not been installed. Saeki also indicated he would inform the police department; however, it is unclear if this has been done.
In August 2021, we contacted Sgt.Paul Segura of the Whittier Police Department (WPD). Despite traffic enforcement efforts, issues continued. Today, the WPD continues to cite vehicles on Janine Drive.
In November 2023, we contacted the city's engineering department about a traffic calming study. Michelle Chapman promptly provided the information and mentioned a new feedback trailer would be deployed in our area. She promised to share deployment dates, but we did not receive them, likely due to the holidays. We are unsure if the trailer was deployed.
Most Recent Safety Issues
The East Whittier City School District has used Janine Drive as part of their school bus route for several years. Specifically, the bus stops in front of the 15300 block of Janine Drive to pick up and drop off children. There have been instances of cars driving around the school bus while its stop sign was activated.
In early 2024, we witnessed a speeding vehicle lose control on La Alba Dr. Two cars were racing westbound on Janine Drive, turning north onto La Alba Dr. The second car hit a brick mailbox, deploying its airbags. The police responded.
In mid-2024, a drunk driver destroyed a parked car on the 15700 block of Janine Drive. On October 11, 2024, a speeding vehicle hit a brick wall and ended up on a neighbor's lawn on Janine Drive.
Update
In November 2024, the residents of Janine Drive signed a petition to support the installation of speed humps on Janine Drive from Santa Gertrudes Avenue to La Serna Drive. We were able to obtain over 70% of signatures from homeowners. Unfortunately, residents must take action, because our city representatives will not.
We submitted the petition to the city in mid-November 2024. The next step is a traffic study. We will keep you posted!
Every resident signing petition must read this book.
